I had to re-install gnome-lokkit and run it again. I chose medium security. The ports for http, ssh, and mail should be open to my local network. I can now login using ssh. I had to run the apache config and give it a web server name before it would respond with the test page. I still cannot get vnc to work. I am getting “connection reset by peer”. I think it is firewall configuration issue and I am tired of chasing it down.
W3C in damage control mode over Eolas fallout
W3C to patent office: Eolas lawsuit doesnt validate. W3C Director Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of HTML and the web, today presented the U.S. Patent Office with prior art establishing that the Eolas patent is invalid and should be re-examined “to eliminate this unjustified impediment to the operation of the web.” [Jeffrey Zeldman Presents: The Daily Report]
Timmy asks the USPO to review the 1998 letter from the W3C to the USPO about prior art. The letter cites 1993 documents about including embedded programs in the HTML spec.
Red Hat Linux 7.2 Install
I installed Red Hat 7.2 on my son's PC(athlon 900/320MB/6GB). I had originally planned to install it on my old AMD350 but I couldn't the old PC to power up. I briefly looked at barebones replacements but decided to not spend the money. So cleaned out the partition I had used for XP and installed linux. Everything installed fine although it did not detect the correct video card(Viper 330) and wanted to use a generic three button mouse for the Intellimouse.
The hard part was getting Linux to see the internet. I was pretty sure ISA was stopping it so I went searching for configuration directions. I ended up using the directions found on Linux on SBS. I could not get Red Hat registration/update agent to work but I thought it was just for registering with Red Hat so I ignored it. I spent a long time trying to figure out why rpmfind did not work and gave up. So I downloaded a couple of updates and tried to update manually but the package dependencies was a pain. Then I noticed that Redhat had posted a new up2date and Update agent. They went to a more secure form of updating. So I updated the packages manually and registered with Red Hat. I am now using Update Agent and my complimentary 7 day membership to get 7.2 up to date. There are a lot of packages to update but update agent is figuring out the dependencies for me.
THPC: How to remove/uninstall Win9x/Me or Win XP 2000 NT from a Dual-Boot

This was nice to find. It just took me a long time to find it.
[Mishoo] PieNG — PNG support in MSIE/Win
I have known about the png format for a long time but I really did not have a reason to use it. I still see more problems with the size of graphics files. GIF and JPG work just fine for me. Since I like Mishoo's work, I read his article and learned about opacity and IE's lack of standard support for png. I still don't have anything I want to do with png but translucent objects are a nice feature you need png for. For more info check out the ALA article, Cross-Browser Variable Opacity with PNG: A Real Solution.
811839 – An I/O Device Error May Occur When You Access the Floppy Disk Drive in Windows XP Service Pack 1
SYMPTOMS
You may experience intermittent problems when you try to access the floppy disk drive on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). For example, when you try to copy files to a floppy disk by using Windows Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when Windows dynamically changes the computer processor power state to a deeper idle state (from the C2 state to the C3 state).
Yesterday I went back and tried to fix my floppy drive problem. This has been going on for a long time and is annoying because I cannot create usable bootdisks. The first thing I did was replace the floppy drive. With a brand new drive I got errors and unusual chkdsk sounds when creating a bootdisk for ghost. I fixed the bootdisk by going to a Win98 machine and copying over good copies. I checked the md5 for ghostpe and it was different on the floppy although it had the correct filesize. Last night I updated the bios to make sure the cmos was not the source of the problem. Today I found this KB. It sounds very much like the problem I have been experiencing but I am real reluctant to edit the registry to fix this problem.
About LIDS
What is LIDS?
- A kernel patch and admin tool to enhance the linux kernel security
- Implementation of reference monitor in kernel
- Mandatory Access Control in the kernel
- An active project with many helpful hackers.
I ended up researching security on Linux and I ended up here. I also looked at SELinux(NSA) and Owl(Openwall). Since I have a somewhat old copy of Redhat 7.2 I have been planning on installing, LIDS sounds the most interesting from a server fixup standpoint. Now if I can ever get started with the Linux install!
Delegate Exchange Administration in SBS
I have been playing with the terminal services client included in SBS2K. I found out that my regular userid setup could not administer Exchange. So I delegated Exchange Adminstration privileges over to the the Domain Admin group.
