I have noticed a new flurry of opinions about CSS versus table debate. The latest essay is by Tim Bray at ongoing. The general idea is to separate data from the code that displays it. Some of the problems are:

  1. Browser compatibility with the standards is at the core of many of the problems.
  2. Some web pages are easier to do with tables.
  3. CSS is evolving and backward compatibility remains a problem.

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.

We must accept that this creative pulse within us is God's creative pulse itself.

Rodeo Time!

We kept our horses in yesterday and they were not happy. Our horses get turned out almost everyday. Anything less is unacceptable to them. The youngest horses have the hardest time the next day. All of the horses want to run and buck but the older horses can control themselves until they reach the pasture. The young ones have more difficulty. Whimsy is my problem child. He is a colt who is comfortable being away from his mom. He left the stall yesterday when one of our girls was cleaning the stall. That caused a commotion. When I take out to his pasture with his mom, he has been trying to convince me that he knows what he is doing and that I should back off! That's a bad combination. Since he is acting like a smart-ass, I have had to accelerate his training. The most important lesson for a young horse to understand is that someone else is always in charge. When he is in the pasture, his mom or another mare is in charge. When he is being walked to or from the pasture, the human is in charge. His job is to walk at my shoulder. If he falls behind he can rear and strike me with his front hooves. If he gets in front he can strike me with his rear hooves. As they say, “been there, done that, not going to do it again!” Horses believe strongly in the chain of command. That is how the herd survives. This colt will understand soon enough why I am at the top of the chain of command. The other horses already understand I am at the top. The most facinating aspect of handling horses is that I will not have to be physical to make him understand where his position in the herd is. The dominant mare uses the same tactics.

Fasting to increase Spirituality

Last night the subject for 5th and 6th grades was fasting to increase spirituality. It is a difficult subject under normal circumstances but we had over 160 kids so it was tough subject and large groups. Crowd control issues overwhelmed the message. We finished with a great worship set. It was mixed bag type of night. My son, Henry, wasn't there. He had gone with a friend to see X2. When he returned from the movie I discussed fasting with him. I am pretty sure he enjoys the Area 56 celebrations and wants to keep up with what's happening. I proposed he he fast from video games for a week and he thought it was a very bad idea. No surprise!

Today we went to our regular 10 o'clock celebration and the subject was fasting. David, our senior pastor, did a great job presenting the subject but I just don't think adults like the subject any better than 5th and 6th graders. I talked with Henry again about the subject. I told him I am not only going to give up Freecell but I will do a food fast on Wednesday. David had challenged us to join him with a food fast on Wednesday. Freecell I need to give up so if I am honest with myself it doesn't count. Food I need. Henry offered to give up Mountain Dew for the week. It's not video games but I can work with that. We talked some more about how giving up Mountain Dew would increase his spirituality. He offered to read something at random from the Bible. I liked the idea since I think he would benefit from any reading of the Bible but I thought he should focus on one of the Gospels, such as, John. I just happened to be reading John this week. He said he preferred Mark! Huh? Well, we both are going to fast this week. I am going to give up Freecell and re-use the time to memorize favorite Bible verses. Memorizing Bible verses has always been a low priority task for me but it is much better use of time than playing Freecell. On Wednesday I will commit to a food fast and increased prayer. Henry will abstain from Mountain Dew when he comes home from school and instead read a chapter from Mark. Wow, I am impressed! I wish I could take credit for it but all of my ideas were rejected. God will make a way.

I got my new camera two days ago. It is a late birthday present. I finally gave in and admitted that my camcorder was not good enough for the job of taking horse pictures. The biggest problem I faced was low light auto focus. I had far too many fuzzy shots of horses in low light. I also could use more pixels so I bought a Sony DSC-F717. Here is an example of my test shots. Our model is Sassy, our house cat. I had to do a little Photopaint magic to fix the flash reflection in her eyes. Otherwise, what you see is what you get.

Ichthus Festival

One of our student leaders was out of town at Ichthus. My curiousity got the better of me and I looked it up on the internet. It is a Christian Music festival in the Kentucky countryside. One of the student pastors told me it was Christian music's version of Woodstock. I guess he has different memories of Woodstock than me. Woodstock was a lot of things but I have a real tough time seeing it as a model for a Christian music festival.

I am still working on medical issues. The surgeon wants to be paid before he does any work. I asked for an itemized bill so I can do some financial planning and they said they would send me a letter.  I found out that there are a variety of patient's bill of rights out on the web. Ohio does have a statute that requires hospitals to provide an estimate of customary charges. I asked the hospital for an itemized list and they said they would comply. This is slightly better than when my son was born. My biggest concern is that they are charging me the highest rates. I have no way of confirming my suspicion.

Are mammograms are part of a health scam?

I finally got around to paying my wife's medical bills. She had a fuzzy thing on her mammogram. Boy, was I surprised! For a ten minute office visit she got charged $254. By my math that means the doctor is grossing about $1500 per hour. I wrote checks that totaled $1600 and we really haven't done anything.  We paid $600 for a test but the rest is office visits. My wife told me they wanted to do a second test but she told them no. It's kind of funny in a morbid way. I am beginning to look at mammograms as part of a health scam. I know I should try and look at from the health professional's viewpoint, “Better safe than sorry”. At this cost I cannot help myself. I see doctors as greedy and I now I question their motives for everything they do. I do not think they care. I think they are just part of a much larger process that went wrong several decades ago and has not gotten any better. I was shocked with the health care process when my son was born twelve years ago and from my recent exposure to the modern version of health care management I know it has not gotten any better. I can see where many people without health insurance are avoiding routine diagnostic care because it is too expensive.
